Handle Correctly

Paul writes to a young Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15,

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

What is so interesting about this specific passage is his wording of how we are to handle the word of truth. It was during this time that the chosen weapon was the sword, there wasn’t much else to choose from. He implores Timothy to ὀρθοτομέω (orthotomeō) – to handle the word of truth the right way. He is using words that would describe someone holding a sword or sharp weapon the correct way.

It was the Hebrew writer that penned these words regarding the power of the Word:

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God is powerful. It cuts to the heart of man. We need to be careful how we handle it, not tossing here it and there nonchalantly. For with the Word of God we are saved, that is if we handle it correctly, understanding the Biblical truth and not leaving it to one’s own interpretation. Let us not conform the Bible to our way of thinking, but let’s renew our minds to the Bible.

Blessings,
